In conjunction with CMBB, the TPMB has an organized seminar program designed to focus on topics relevant to marine biotechnology and biomedicine.
The seminar series is organized by the TPMB students and it is composed of topics of timely interest. The TPMB seminar is offered twice per month
To monitor success and accomplishments of our students, we hold an annual one-day retreat on the campus of a local San Diego biotechnology company.
All TPMB faculty and students attend, as will the Advisory Board and representatives from the Industrial Associates. There is be an overview presentation by the directors,
followed by research presentations by the students and discussion. The Advisory Board meets with the Steering Committee after the presentations to provide guidance to the
students and to the program. There is a social event to allow students to meet and interact with Advisory Board members and our industrial colleagues. The retreat promotes
cross-fertilization within the program, initiation of collaborations, as well as giving students feedback that will enhance the quality of their research and careers.
One innovative element of the TPMB is its industrial internship program. Students are required to serve three-month internships in local biotechnology
companies. We have 9 local biotechnology companies currently participating. Many of these companies are involved in marine-related science, while others
see the benefits of working with bright graduate students. These internships typically take place in the second or third years. An interview process,
conducted by the Industrial Internship Coordinator, involving matching the student to the goals of an appropriate industry, is used to assure a good fit.
Many of our students enter graduate school undecided about careers in academic or industrial research. The internship program will expose them to
non-academic research environments so that they can make informed career decisions. Undoubtedly the program benefits our participating industries
by facilitating student placement upon graduation. The cooperating companies are as follows:
- Aurora Biosciences
- Neurocrine Biosciences
- CalBioMarine Technologies
- Nereus Pharmaceuticals
- Mitokor Corporation
- CPKelco Corporation
- Sequoia Biosciences
- Diversa Corporation
- KentSeaTech Technologies
Teaching Opportunities To provide experience in teaching students will teach a minimum of one quarter during their degree program
